I think in the last decade or so it has become more and more important to control and lock women's body and mind up in old traditions and values while allowing them the "freedom" to work. Haven't we had such archaic dialogues since the beginning of time? What was this century again? It's repulsive. I am tired of the women characters parroting the suffocatingly traditional lines that I'm incomplete without a man/ without motherhood. I am tired of reading male definitions of what it means to be a woman. Even as a middle aged woman she tends to dissociate when unwanted(?) sexual advances are made! It could even be a defense mechanism to forget her own sexuality! Author says some nattumburathukari (I assume it means that a woman who can't say no to men) is hidden in every woman: heights of male fantasyâ–ˇ Her sexuality is depicted vaguely, not as something with intention and awareness, one would wonder if she reproduced asexually like an amoeba! She seemed ok with marital rape/hate sex. I couldn't understand why she left her husband though. His protagonist is supposed to be an independent woman, daring enough to leave her unhappy marriage and bring up her daughter all by herself. Highly disappointing read.Sethu's attempt to define the modern Malayali woman is rather pathetic.
